A group of pharmacists in Katsina State have filed a complaint against Hajiya Farida Ibrahim, the representative of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria in Katsina State, for allegedly harassing and imposing fines on them, seizing drugs from their shops and closing their shops illegally

The group filed the complaint on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the office of Magajin Garin Katsina at Kofar Soro in Katsina.

The Magajin Gari’s representative, Alhaji Abdu Wakilin Kudu, listened to the group's  complaint as they described the abuses they were subjected to at the hands of Hajiya Farida Ibrahim, who is in charge of monitoring pharmacies and drug stores in Katsina State.

The spokesman of the group, Malam Abu Sufyan, said they support the monitoring and regulation of the operations of pharmacies, but they reject the strictness and severity of Hajiya Farida's approach.

“Nobody can enforce the implemented of regulations one hundred percent under the current circumstances and conditions in this country.”

After taking notes of the group's complaints, the Magajin Gari's representative said they would investigate the matter and invite Hajiya Farida Ibrahim together with the group to have a forum for mutual understanding and cooperation.

Katsina Times investigation found that these supermarkets and pharmacies have provided a lot of employment to many young men and women across Katsina State.

Closing them down will further plunge the state into a situation of unemployment and expose the state to insecurity threats.

Our investigation further revealed that small shops opened by qualified health workers in remote areas of the state are helping to provide emergency support to the poor and vulnerable.

Katsina Times contacted Hajiya Farida Ibrahim who told the medium that everything she does is in accordance with laid down rules and regulations as instructed by the agency that deployed her to Katsina, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria.

She pointed out that the fees she charges are regular and are payable annually, which every operator in the industry should pay at the end of the year.

She said that the fines she collects are also within the rules and regulations stipulated by the agency she represents.

Similarly, Hajiya Farida Ibrahim stressed that she only seizes medicines and drugs that violate the rules and regulations.

Responding to allegations by the shopkeepers that she oversteps the scope of her duties, Hajiya Farida confirmed that she only closes down medicine shops that violate the rules.

In a separate case, a popular pharmacy in Katsina called Lugga Clinic and Pharmacy Limited has sued the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and Hajiya Farida Ibrahim in court over the closure of the shop.

Lugga Pharmacy has filed a lawsuit against the closure of its store on November 28, 2024.

However, the court, considering that patients at the hospital would suffer due to the closure, granted permission to reopen the facility to continue its operations and fixed December 18 for further hearing on the matter.
